y mid-century, after some negotiated compromises and deployments of helpful technologies, and particularly after Russia’s power plays in the east consolidated European energy and financial independence, Euros were finally adopted across the EU. Notably, the old Swedish Krona was finally retired.

To mark the change, the new currency was officially called the “New Euro”, with the expectation that on the street it would continue to be called the “Euro.”

But the street had other ideas. In certain circles, the “Euro” was already referred to as the “Neuro”. And with the “New Euro,” this nickname became widespread and common.

Financial ministers and other officials decided to own and co-opt the term, often referring to it as the “Neuro” in their less formal press conferences.

The late 21st-century European economy had been reset and heavily re-calibrated by the tremendous success of the rebuilt, low-corruption Ukraine and its influence on nearby economies. Consequently, many of those who objected to officials co-opting the term “Neuro” chose to adopt an entirely new nickname for the New Euro, the “Ze,” in honor of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

By Nyårsfirandet 2099, the price for a 75-minute Metro ticket in Stockholm was 3 Ze, which was also a typical hourly wage.
